1/ I went to the shop today. I have some thoughts on it. I never thought such a simple outing could cause so much reflection but so alien an experience it was, I have to jot some notes down and you get to read them:

2/ Everyone was far nicer. Way opposite to the fear narrative CNN is pushing, people seem to be getting along better. People were making room more readily. We were nodding and greeting each other with a communal sense of watchfulness, purpose, and consideration.

3/ It was a beautiful afternoon. Around 65-70F on Capitol Hill. I made the mistake of wearing my quilted Barbour jacket. People noticed. Especially when I was lugging heavy bags home from the Trader Joes.

4/ Speaking of Trader Joes. They had a “one in one out” policy. It was far more pleasant to be in the store like this. No bumping into each other’s trollies (carts) and no one reaching over me to grab the Organic Matcha-Infused Whole Wheat Tofurky Burgers or whatever.

5/ It was also wonderful to see people being polite. It’s almost like the city has turned into the best version of itself. Camaraderie abounds. Prejudice and suspicion have fallen away.

6/ More than not, cities are hostile places by design. Capitol Hill was like a small community today. There’s no great moral to this story. Except that maybe many are getting a break they desperately needed. In amongst the horror, silver linings.

Very similar pleasant experience at Target in Las Vegas today - store well-stocked, staff incredibly polite, everyone did their best to manage social distancing but still communicate - nice experience wishing each other health and prosperity

I have, without any conscious effort, found myself thanking people doing every kind of job lately - for what they do, and for their good spirit. My own work carries on, and do the same there. Human nature prevails, even when misanthropes conspire against it.

I’m 26 and this whole break thing has lifted so much stress off my shoulders. In come is secure for now. I hope we as a nation just slow down a bit permanently.
