I do not consider it rude to ask and find it very common in queer communities no matter folks appearances. A simple “what are your pronouns?” is perfect :)
Completely understand that within the community. For some1 like me who is not part of the community but lives in an area where it’s not uncommon (Brighton, UK), but still uncommon enough that some may be confused by that question it’s important to me I know the best way to start

Hopefully that response doesn’t come across the wrong way. 100% agree in certain situations/locations I can ask what someone’s pronouns are, in all other situations I can default to they/them until they clarify (probably without even realising they have!)

Your intent to be kind and respectful is very obvious :) I think that question needs to be normalized (like pronouns in bio regardless of cis/trans identity) and I also understand the discomfort in asking. They/them pronouns is a fine place to start when meeting someone.
