I definitely seem to be in the minority when it comes to opinions on sub streams on Twitch. I see it as great added value for those who are financially supporting the channel, and was planning on doing viewer driven content a couple of times a month with this feature.

I don't think that's a good analogy. When Non-subbers come to your stream, they don't get a perk, but they still get the stream. With sub-exclusive streams, non-subbers come and get nothing. You've literally thrown a fence up. They are barred from being involved completely.
aren’t sub only streams the equivalent of bonus podcast episodes/content for Patreon donators? Do people have problems with those?

It's closer than emotes, but even so. Its really easy to ignore extra content locked behind a website you don't visit on the regular. Less so when the channel you regularly visit loads up with a locked icon (or however twitch will indicate it.)

There's a 5 minute preview where you get the normal stream video then a prompt to sub when the preview ends. The streams are also marked with stars in your navigation/browse sections so they're easily identifiable.
