Now you can't go from amateur to pro without paying a lot. Literally no option. I know many good players who qualified for play offs through ladder while having full time job or being full time students. I qualified through challengers and basically earned $1k for playing online.
I think something that may be being overlooked is the location of the LANs. Based on 1st location, they’ve picked a destination where players who qualify can make it a holiday, maybe they do the same with APAC and EU events, but maybe not

Many people just don't have this kind of money. The average monthly wage in my country is $300, and the flight alone will cost $800+. In Russia the average wage is $437. And we have so many good players people often joked about making Eastern Europe into separate region.

Correction: the average wage in Russia went up to $670 last year but my point still stands. Vacation in Vegas is simply unaffordable for most people.
