Across the country, police departments are confronting a recruitment crisis. In total, 86% of police chiefs nationwide report a shortage of sworn officers, with nearly half stating that the shortage has worsened over the past five years.

I used to think they were just anti-police (some are) but now I believe they have convinced themselves that the cure is worst than the disease. Its a distorted view of reality that can lead to more human suffering. People cannot thrive when their safety is constantly threatened.

And finally, government needs to restore our representation in the criminal lawmaking process by requiring elected representatives to vote on and approve any rule or regulation *before* it can be criminally enforced. 8/

Lawmakers should also make legal compliance easier by recodifying the criminal law into a single statutory code so ppl don’t have to read through mountains of legalese to find out what is considered criminal. The government should also regularly repeal laws we no longer need. 7/

To address , the federal government and state legislatures should consider measures that would set a default standard of criminal intent, and expand the ability of well-meaning citizens to invoke a “mistake-of-law” defense. 6/

In short, the full body of criminal law is too large and complex for the people subject to it to read, let alone understand. Without basic intent requirements, well-meaning citizens unknowingly commit crimes everyday, despite their behavior *not* being morally objectionable. 5/

    (4) Criminal laws are often codified counterintuitively—that is, in places you wouldn’t expect to find crimes, like a state’s agricultural code. And (5) a growing share of criminal laws don’t specifically require a showing of criminal intent on the part of the violator. 4/

    (2) Old and outmoded laws are rarely ever pruned from the statutes. (3) Criminal lawmaking exceedingly happens outside the traditional political process. At the federal level, 98% of crimes are not found in statutes passed by elected representatives. 3/

    (1) There are way too many crimes on the books. At the federal level alone, more than 300,000 criminally enforceable rules and regulations govern ordinary business practices and everyday activities—and, if violated, can lead to prison time. 2/

puts everyone at risk of being prosecuted for things we don’t know (and, in many cases, would never think) are illegal. It’s a problem—one with 5 basic factors... 1/

Criminal law has exploded in size and scope. With more than 300,000 federal crimes on the books, anyone can be prosecuted for almost anything. explains how the expansion of criminal laws puts well-meaning citizens at risk of prosecution.

Why are people skeptical of a “public health approach to crime?” Because of crap like this: Historically baseless, logically compromised & ideologically motivated. And I’m being nice.
