Oh well, funny that. So do you think it might be *possible* that stereotypes have zero to do with anything innate, and *might* reflect something other than what people actually do? That *maybe* it has to do with what the dominant group in the culture chooses to emphasize?

That they might have something to do with perceptions that aren't necessarily real? And that there's real harm that can come of this? (And it does). And yes, this applies to "positive" stereotypes too. Again, there's a whole freaking literature on why those aren't good.

Um, black people are better at basketball is a stereotype. It’s also true. Evidence: makeup of the NBA

So they are bad at baseball and hockey? Try this: look at where the public basketball courts are. Then go back and look at where Jewish people largely lived pre WWII. And ask yourself why it was that Jewish people were stereotypically basketball players.

They are good at baseball. Hockey costs a lot of money to play and black people are poorer than whites in America.

Whadayya know! So maybe the buy-in cost has something to do with it? And not anything about black folks in particular?

???? Then why are black people so much better at basketball?

Take a look at how people get into college and the associated costs - and how you are likely to defray them. Being black doesn't give you any special ability here. (Also, why were Jews so good at basketball back in the day? )

Remember what you said about the expense of hockey. Are white people just better at it? Are non-Americans "naturally" better at soccer? Or do you think it might have to do with what people are exposed to early on, given where they live?

Might the costs of college (and the methods of athletic scholarships) have something to do with this? Maybe if your only hope to pay for college is via athletics that might affect what you choose to do once there?
