How does this work? You don't trust the Govt - I get that, they have a lot of power, transparency and accountability would help. But instead you decide to trust a pusher of conspiracy theories, you don't know who they are, if they have an agenda beyond their stated one...
they are often wrong. There is zero transparency, zero responsibilty and zero accountability - you don't even get to vote them out. So to me, they are worse than Govt. So why do people trust them? Genuinely interested in people's ideas.
Conspiracy theories are easier. Look at climate change. You have this slow-rolling global disaster that requires humans radically change their behavior, sacrifice some conforms. Awful, right? Enter conspiracy theorists. It’s all a Chinese hoax. Problem solved.
If we had dealt with it 40 years ago we might not need to make large changes now. 
Is it also because extreme political partisanship and dishonesty makes people more susceptible to other groups seizing this agenda for their own gain?
