Received the official author copy of my book yesterday and was pretty excited to see they put Bryan Stevenson's quote calling it "a must read" on the cover. So in this case, you should judge a book by its cover. And you should always listen to Bryan.

The push to rollback isn't about public safety. The presence of white nationalists in the push to undo the law gives you a hint of what's at stake for many opponents. Let's just hope people who really care about public safety win the day & we give it a chance to work

There’s a mock solitary confinement cell here at the Capitol today. I have friends who have existed like this for decades. We shouldn’t torture humans this way.

Before you say "we have to give credit to Trump for criminal justice reform" remember his AGs, Sessions and Barr, have been the most backward and punitive in recent history. So & others, the First Step Act should be celebrated. But overall the damage is catastrophic.

Great piece on the urgent need for clemency in Louisian and exploring whether Gov. John Bel Edwards will ramp up the use of the clemency power as part of criminal justice reform efforts via

Alice Johnson is one person who won early release because celebrities brought her to Trump's attention. She deserved it. But there are thousands more like her in prison. We need a real pardon process that works fairly. We need real criminal justice reform. Don't be fooled.

The disheartening part for me was the claim that he "got it done"-- referring to crim justice reform as a mission accomplished. It's not done. The First Step Act was meant to be a First Step. We still await steps 2 & 3 & 4. And Alice Johnson remains a sample size of one.

When I assert that America’s CJ system has utterly lost its moral compass—and make no mistake, that is what I assert—it’s because I believe the evidence demonstrates conclusively that incidents like this are not anecdotal but systematic.

Can’t quite believe we’re at a point where Trump highlighted criminal justice reform and clemency in his ad in the Super Bowl. Not sure what to say other than this shows criminal justice reform can be a winning issue for anyone.

A judge in Pennsylvania sentenced a 36-year-old woman w/ stage 4 uterine cancer to 10 months in jail for shoplifting $109 worth of groceries. On the day she was sentenced, she was scheduled to meet w/ her doctor to discuss a last-ditch treatment effort.

How do people with discretion allow this to happen? Thx for showing the dynamics that allow mass incarceration to happen

This is an awful lot of litigation to keep just one judge in Louisiana (Cantrell) from setting bail in an unconstitutional manner. Judicial elections (and apnmnts) matter. Judges like Cantrell can't be regulated; they need to be removed.

Michigan pot shops sold $10 million worth of marijuana in the first six weeks it was legal to sell weed in the state. Also, Michael Thompson has served 25 years of a 60-year sentence for selling weed in Michigan. , grant his clemency request!

Fellow NYers, don't you feel safer already knowing this is where we have a police presence? This doesn't make any sense as a matter of safety or resource deployment. Can anyone still wonder how bias against the poor and people of color gets baked into arrest records?
