Is it just willful ignorance to pretend you don't understand that as community learns more about a new virus (or anything, really), recommendations for how to be safe around the virus change?

No it's poor education and messaging about how science and medicine works, "Trust the science" as if it's a concrete monolith at the same time as saying "the science is always changing" is cognitively dissident.

For a while I used to listen to lectures from the beginning just to see how quickly knowledge evolved

This seems obvious to me, a layperson, but apparently it’s complicated. Very complicated.

That's science. It's self-correcting and constantly evolving as we learn more. To believe in the process, however, you have to be okay with that. When people dig their heels in, as alt-med practitioners and antivaxxers do, they show themselves to be close-minded and irrational.

I would say it's a combination of mostly willful ignorance (almost none of these people would be acting differently if the experts had everything correct from the start) with a bit of how a large part of the population doesn't understand scientific methodology.

A lot of the time, it is the inability of a brain to understand complicated information. This is why not everybody can be a scientist in real life (though many play it on social and other media). Being a scientist starts from Elementary School, not from when you searched Google!

I think it’s a combination of that and utter desperation to latch onto some kind of “gotcha”. They want it all to be a lie and will spin up any change in stance into being a deliberate fraud.
