I was told last night that being a former public defender doesn’t make me a “real lawyer”. I represented people regardless of class, race, & gender. I fought injustice. I kept hope alive. I’m not just a real lawyer- I’m the realist. And I’ll be an outstanding DA too

Today is Rosa Parks Birthday and all I can think of is how she was charged and convicted in 1955 for violating Montgomery City Code. DAs still overcharge and leverage the criminal legal system to punish instead of heal. We deserve better.

I can’t wait for the February when Black People are not more likely to be stopped, searched, arrested, overcharged, sentenced longer, and hit with lethal force by our criminal legal system.

Today was the first ever District Attorney Debate in a prison. We talked issues, we talked vision... but most importantly we affirmed our commitment to humanity and dignity. Being incarcerated shouldn’t mean you get cut out of being civically engaged- and for me it never will.

Sometimes it’s not about securing votes. It’s more important to really touch the people and ground yourself in principal. I’m glad you could make it

Looking forward to today’s historic debate! Reform discussions must include the voices of those directly impacted by the criminal legal system.

Crazy to say that a public defender isn't a real lawyer. It doesn't get any more real than being a public defender.

I’m running for DA in Los Angeles because I believe we can’t continue to criminalize our way out of poverty. We have a responsibility to use our civic institutions to promote wellbeing, healing, and justice. I’m also a former public defender- and I’m damn proud of that.

Like the clients I represented, public defenders are often written off by the oppressive systems they are fighting against. Being told by the incumbent DA that I wasn’t a “real lawyer” only further reminded me why I am in this race. We deserve better. I am better.

Public defenders inspire me because they fight even when they know the odds are against them. They fight for their clients, to make sure they are heard. I feel so lucky to be a public defender and I hope that someday I could come close to the greatness I have seen in court.

It means showing up and standing with the demonized, so that the demonizing will stop. It means standing with the disposable, so that hopefully the day will come when we stop throwing people away. It means standing up, for the poor, powerless, and vulnerable.

I look forward to voting for a on March 3rd. Let’s decriminalize homelessness, and make the LA DA’s office the most transformative and restorative in the country.
