This is such a cold and cynical view of this already difficult industry. It shouldn’t be that hard for us to care about one another — especially when there is a power dynamic in play, as with a salaried editor and a freelance writer.
A really good assignment editor, which I’m fortunate to have, looks out for the best interests of a reporter while juggling the demands of higher-ranking editors and the needs of readers. And then, if that weren’t enough, they can actually make a story better.

You’re totally right. Editors capable of all this are really hard to find. And if a reporter really trusts their editor, they’re a safety net as they take risks and try to be ambitious and can help save the reporter from doing something stupid.
