when I was leaving the LA Times, some of my editors quietly told me, "sneakers are ok here, but you really shouldn't wear them at the NYT." Wearing dress shoes every day maybe lasted a month. Wearing a tie lasted two days. I show up now dressed like a middle-schooler.https://twitter.com/jswatz/status/1136827488741580801 …

Sneakers, now and always. When I was at the WaPo Len Downie told my father to buy me some real shoes. I was in my mid 30s. He was joking, but only kind of.

since then, I have invested in an absurd collection of what I call “work sneakers”

That probably had more to do with your lackluster sneaker game at the time

Haha touché. Ask @S_Evangelina. She can confirm, hopefully, that it has improved a little.

The kind of work you produce, you could wear burlap to the office and still be a star.

Country boy that I am, and given that it was 99 degrees and 127% humidity the day I arrived in Washington, I wore a short-sleeve shirt to my ‘welcoming’ interview with Downie. He advised me to, well, never do that again.

We need to organize a journalists fashion show. Any clothes that have heen washed in the last month or so would be fine to model.
