I’ve been working at the NYT Student Journalism Institute this week. I’m convinced they ask reporters to be editors here so we can feel like giant hypocrites whenever we hear ourselves saying things like “add more sweep to the nutgraf” and “your 8th graf is actually the lede.”

have you changed anyone’s lede to be more dramatic, verging on inaccurate?

This priceless reporter’s-eye view of editing at @nytimes was shared with me in 1995, when I joined the staff. I see the fingerprints of @ralphblu & @dgbxny And is SAROBE-Met our own @samrob12 ? Anyway, I still love it. Ruefully. pic.twitter.com/wNRn4bRzlu

my favorite is saying, abt each graf: “move this up higher” ... but then, uh, everything lands back where you have it once you move everything up higher!
