When I was in fourth grade we all had to keep a little notebook of synonyms for "said" that we could plug in and honestly I blame exercises like this for one of the worst writing tics, which is using words other than "said" for said
Oh man, this is one of my biggest pet peeves as a reader. Especially if so and so laughs/quips/gushes while nursing a drink or munching on a salad.
