I went to a H.S. where my chemistry teacher taught us to make pecan pralines with a bunsen burner and a kid once lost a paycheck playing poker in class. I was very fortunate: I could go into a field like journalism because I finished school with modest debt, thanks to scholarships and a thing called the Texas Tomorrow Fund, which my dad paid off for me and my brother by collecting cans and bottles throughout our childhood.
