Neighbors near the power plant in Astoria heard a loud boom and saw green light fill their windows. Some fled their homes, afraid of what was happening. “It was scary,” said one man who lived nearby for 30 years. “It was like something from outer space, like we were invaded.”

Closer to the plant, one resident said he could see a “green aura” fill his windows and soon, he saw people rushing away on the street. His girlfriend hurriedly packed an overnight bag. “She was ready to go,” he said.

A ConEd spokesman at the scene just gave a quick update: it was started by a “small electrical fire” that affected transformers and caused a “dip.” No injuries. Cause under investigation.
