People recorded the balloon being shot down.
So you’re saying regular folks could see it from their own backyards?
Why would that be a spy balloon? That makes no sense!
James Bond walks into a bar.
Random woman: “Ah yes, James Bond, works for MI5, code name 007, license to kill.”
James Bond: “Huh, maybe I need to, uh, get a new identity.”
I released a new article: Unreal vs Unity: A key UX difference
It's about a direct comparison in interface between Unreal and Unity, and a question: What can we improve, versus what needs improvement?
It's a big time difference between going through Perforce to find that one edit, vs visually in-editor seeing what happened. And if that's not possible data wise, even seeing a recording of what had happened before is useful.
A screenshot a day keeps the confusion away.
This kind of timelapse recording can be really useful in tools & editors.
Find out what has changed, when it was changed, etc. Very important on multi year projects, where you want to see progress, and also see issues crop up as well as get resolved. "What have we tried before?"
I think it'd be neat to have a directory like that, where each example has videos of screenshots of games doing that, and the twist they have probably added. The ones on TV Tropes are usually textual only
Also the way the names of bosses show up and fade out. The little repeating voice sounds like in Banjo Kazooie.
It's so well done. The combinations work great!
But it also make me curious: Is there a website for all gaming tropes? Sorta like this:8
Cult of the Lamb is such an interesting game. It has such classically popular features from other games in it. Such as Legend of Zelda, Stardew valley, etc. Building a home town, rogue-like elements, permanent buffs, a fishing minigame, a cute art style but with a dark twist, etc
Interested in UX and building UIs for games? Don't have a traditional UX education/background? No Problem! My team is looking for UX/UI Apprentices. No experience needed. Start with an 18 week boot camp, then come work with me and my team.

This also made me curious myself: What game development folks do you really like to follow on Twitter?
I bet there’s entire groups of people that I haven’t discovered yet, who tweet about interesting specific niches
I’m curious: What are you particularly looking for?
Because there are splits within the general game industry TL, where some folks are focused on indie games, others AAA, some on the tools for games (like me), some on business metrics (@ZhugeEX), some on teaching (@FreyaHolmer)
We're looking for a contract #UnrealEngine C++ programmer! Help us make Yarn Spinner for Unreal Engine be the best dialogue plugin out there. Learn more and apply: https://thesecretlab.notion.site/Yarn-Spinner-Unreal-C-Programmer-Contract-ef152dbf7bc34ecba43b2d9cad94d4f2…
There has to be some method to poll this in a fun way.
A giant board at the Moscone west main lobby, with stickers! So everyone can put one down on either side
fun fact: after the game got big in 2020 we had to change the colour of the MedBay cross because we apparently violated the Geneva Conventions Act by making it red???? oops
The Bay Area still being single family homes worth multiple millions continues to perplex. It could be a modern day Manhattan, built using the latest materials and techniques to keep it safe, clean, and affordable.
Maybe we'll finally see it happen? It'd be neat to see!
It is so fun to see folks' reaction to her screenshots. And I am thrilled it's being tried out.
But of course: There is absolutely no pressure to finish this, and she can shelve it at anytime. It is neat just to see what happens!
I love 3D menus. It's always slower to navigate, and at a certain point you get annoyed from having to wait for the animations, but it's just so damn charming
Today in being nerd-sniped by the lovely @RYStorm I've made some progress on creating a better hotkey editor for Unreal Engine.
(Section below is going to be the Hotkey Map, displaying hotkeys that are assigned, currently broken)
#unrealengine
Has any game ever done an Ames room with combat? Like, the enemies getting bigger and smaller due to a skewed room and perspective, while really they maintain the same size.
The only one I could find on a quick search is this HL Alyx custom level:
This can for example show the creator that there is clipping, without having to get any NPC into that particular state.
The same goes for other animated objects. Particularly doors are useful to ghost, so that everyone knows where and how they swing:
Another good example of spatial context is 'Ghosting'. This is when you show something in-editor that provides context for something that moves.
For example: If there is an 'emote' point for an NPC somewhere, like sitting down, waving, etc, then make sure that point has a ghost
Though it may just be my feeling of the acquisition spree of 2022, where T2 bought Zynga for 12.7B, MSFT trying to buy ATVI, Sony buys Bungie, and Embracer buying... a lot!
I'm guessing it could be as simple as not enough folks wanting to sell their shares, so there must always be a bid, and so far maybe there have been private bids, but they have all been denied
Or maybe it's way more complex! It just feels like such a big deal, if it ever happens
I always figured there must be some big companies wanting to acquire Unity. I wonder why there wasn't a (hostile) takeover after the stock went below IPO price.
Really, I wonder, because I understand very little about those processes
I bet there are smart UX/UI folks working on this that want it to be better. That know it can be better. And how to do that. And they're somehow being stopped from doing so by someone above them.
All it should take to get that time is to show that video. Anyone can see that.
This was resolved in the end. I did find it in the after googling and asking enough
But what gets me here is that so many companies are building their own version of steam, and basic UX/UI practices aren't being followed. It's such a shame. I just want people to enjoy things
I like gamepass. It allows me to try so many games, and see if I like them. Great stuff!
But if I search for the gamepass advertised game, on the gamepass tab, having gamepass, and it doesn't even give an indication of it existing somewhere on the app, it breaks my UX/UI heart
