We must never stop trying to abolish the electoral college. Democracy means one person -one vote and it should not matter which state it was cast in.

Exactly! That's why people in each state should make sure their state adopts the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. No constitutional amendment required. As soon as states totaling 270 EVs adopt it, it goes into effect.

Go for it! We can definitely get enough states to jump on board. There’s already 13 states ready to sign.

The electoral college has been damaging our democracy. It’s time to scrap it.

How about getting rid of Citizens United first.?

Yes! Thank you for saying that, Mr. Painter! All this talk of disenfranchisement - yet, for instance, 4.5million people voted for Clinton in Florida in November 2016, and not a single one of them was represented at the electoral college vote in December. Time to end that.

Just imagine if the Supreme Cpurt rules that gerrymandering is legal, and that independent redistricting commissions are unconstitutional: A) states can gerrymander their congressional districts B) States can change from WTA to district-by-district allocation like ME and NE

Meaning a party has cheated democracy forever. This is what “originalism” really is; just cynical manipulation of outdated texts to serve the political interests of anti-reform judges.

We also need a bill passed to stop this government shut down chicanery. It should not be allowed. Ever.

Eventually, Congress may pass such an amendment. Not with this Senate, but perhaps with the next, or the next.

I wonder if it wouldn't be easier for all of the states under Dem control to just shift to proportional allocation of electoral votes?
-
That would only benefit Republicans. R's would get electors from Democratic states, but D's wouldn't get electors from R states. It would then be possible for R's to win when D's not only win the popular vote, but would have also win the electoral college under the old rules.
-
Having states adopt the rule that they give their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote would be a workable solution.

Agreed. I've said this for many, many years: the votes should be proportionate, which only a few states do.
-
You haven't been alive enough to say anything for "many. many years."
-
Relative. Many enough for my lifetime.

How about an amendment to the Constitution requiring at LEAST rudimentary background checks, into financial holdings, business dealings, TAX RETURNS, and any emoluments or entanglements which might cause grievous harm to the safety of the American people and the country itself?
