Honestly, I don't have a problem with folks wanting to keep private insurance. I think if Medicare works as it's working now for everyone, you won't need private insurance.

Clearly the mandate will have to come back or this doesn't work. I don't think the government needs to underwrite the entire plan. Currently Medicare has a premium. I think there needs to be a premium on a sliding scale for this to work.

Other countries have both a single payer and private insurance as a supplement. In fact, if you're on Medicare, there's a supplemental insurance you can have to cover things Medicare doesn't cover.
