It's called "canvassing" and literally all political campaigns do this.
-
-
-
This is not traditional canvassing and it shows a troubling lack of regard for data privacy rights.
-
Please explain. I honestly can't see how this is radically different than what is already being done all the time.
-
I’m not saying he’s the first — I’m saying that this is part of a troubling pattern whereby our personal data is being used in ways that we are unaware of and never consented to.
-
Have you been canvassing before? This reads like standard operating procedure going back decades. Am I missing something?
-
We didn’t have the technological capabilities for a tool like this decades ago, nor were there so many opportunities for misuse.
-
I mean we did. All of this has been possible with clipboards and pens since the telephone was invented.

I attended an
#OrganizeWithBernie event on Saturday and I have the app. All it does is confirm whether or not someone is a registered voter--which is already public information. You just keep hatin' on Bernie though. -
I’m not “hating on Bernie”. I’m advocating for responsible data use and respect for privacy.

Wait until she hears about Google, or Facebook. Her heads going to explode
-
Jesse, I'm DYING!!!
-
She knows already, that's why she saying something you guys. I'm glad that everybody thinks that the data breaches that have happened with Facebook and the data mining that happened with Cambridge analytical is such a joke. I'm with her we should be nervous.

I can’t believe this is a real thing. What is he thinking?

I feel like a lot of you people don't know that these systems already exist. When I was canvassing, we entered in each person's stated candidate, we had their contact info. This was the same system Hillary Clinton used. All this is is a different version of the same idea.
-
You seem to be determined to miss the point, which is that the person you talked to gave you their information. They agreed to do that. This “system” asks supporters to give information on people who have not agreed to share it, which will then be available to hostile actors.
-
That has been part of canvassing forever. You ask supporters to give you leads to speak to. It's been part of all the recent national campaigns to this same way.
-
I have canvassed for years, and I was never asked to collect information about voters other than the one to whom I was speaking. And this is not asking for “leads”—just the opposite, it’s asking for non-supporters, so they may be harassed.
-
From what I understand it's been a part of what they now call Deep Canvassing, guess some campaigns use it to different extents and others as you have seen just dont.
