  2. It's a good day for ducks on the Scrape with 50+ pintails, two drake pochards, 4 tufted ducks & the redhead smew on East Scrape, along with hundreds of wigeons, gadwalls, teals, mallards & shovelers & displaying shelducks. No sign of the green-winged teal yet, though

  3. It's a good day for a hot lunch after a long walk on the reserve, followed by a lovely warm pudding with custard, you might be lucky to get some of our mixed berry and apple crumble - if there's any left!

The "redhead" Smew and male Green-winged Teal both showed moderately well from Wildlife Lookout Hide this afternoon, along with displaying Common (Eurasian) Teal, in rather grey conditions

It was bottoms up for these drake pintails on the Scrape today. Even in this pose, the elongated tail feathers help with identification. Up to 50 of these gorgeous ducks remain on the Scrape, with hundreds of teals, shovelers, wigeons & gadwalls, plus the green-winged teal & smew

Those Pesky Bitterns are misbehaving again - they KNOW they're meant to hide in the reedbed and be impossible to see! More at

Otter has been in front of Wildlife Lookout for the last two hours and becoming a regular this week - looks like it might be eating snails. Also very pleased that the visitor waiting patiently to see their first ever otter this morning was rewarded at Island Mere

A bit of a dull morning and a bit wet at Island Mere (pic shows the deepest puddle) but so much noise in the reedbeds - bearded tits pinging, Cetti's warbler blasting out, mewing marsh harriers, squealing water rail & a gentle 'boom' of a bittern practising for the coming season

This was a truly amazing sight we filmed a couple of years ago and, although they came back last year, we haven't seen them in such high numbers so far this winter. If they do arrive again we will let you know, but if anyone comes across a murmuration please update
