"The Middle East has the worst performance regionally. We see the oppression of journalism through cyber crime and terrorism...Syria is still the deadliest country for journalist in 2017" @MargauxEwen
The same 3 countries rank last in the #RSFIndex, and their scores have worsened. #Turkmenistan ranks 178, #Eritrea ranks 179, #NorthKorea is last at 180. The leaders of these countries continue to threaten, persecute, & silence journalists creating a climate of fear & oppression
In #Malta (down 18 places to 65th) the murder of #DaphneCaruanaGalizia marked an extreme shift in Malta’s press freedom climate & lifted the veil on the judicial harassment and intimidation to which journalists are routinely subjected in the island state. #RSFIndex
#Mauritania (down 17 places to 72nd) was Africa’s biggest fall in #RSFIndex. A law was adopted in November 2017 that makes apostasy and blasphemy punishable by death. Five commercial TV & radio stations have been closed since October 2017. @MargauxEwen @karoun
While press freedom is the safest in Europe, the regional indicator has worsened the most this year. In addition to the deaths of journalists Daphne Caruana Galizia & Jan Kuciak, Europe saw 4 of the 5 biggest falls in #RSFIndex ranking in Malta, Czech Republic, Serbia, & Slovakia
Following a president who controlled the media agenda & publicly targeted critical news outlets, Lenin Moreno’s election in May 2017 has eased tension b/t the gov't & privately-owned media. #Ecuador saw the third biggest rise in ranking this year, up 13 places to 92nd #RSFIndexpic.twitter.com/IrWb3UzBGZ
