We act like it's okay that government websites explaining rights to people are often incomprehensible. It's not. For matters of life, liberty, and property, government/court incompetence = injustice.

When talking about simpler legal forms that people can actually understand, I often used the word "convenience." I'm going to stop. Simpler forms are not a matter of "convenience" -- they're a matter of *justice*.

I never met Leila, but I really looked up to her as a role model and inspiration. So sad to hear this. Reminder to do what you love and help people when you have the chance, as you never know how much time you have left.

The complexity of the legal system poor people have to navigate today is a modern-day version of literacy tests. We don't have equal protection under the law in America. We have equal protection under the law IF you can afford a lawyer. Honored to be named a !

This past year, more than ever, I started to see up close just how badly poor people in this country are treated by people who have power in our courts. It's painful. Maddening. Today, like never before, I admire the patience and courage of and others who never gave up.

This can't be stated enough. There is NO WORLD in which pro bono solves the access to justice problem. None. Impossible. Charity by lawyers is not a viable solution. If we rely only on charity, we are admitting we prefer the problem to solving it.

during "Overcoming Media Barriers" today, talking about keeping the promise of access to justice, "complicated legal forms are like reincarnated versions of literacy tests" that oppressed Americans in the past. That's relevant news.

"Sen. Warren presents a vision...where everyone can access our legal system, regardless of whether they can afford an entrance fee. A simpler, more comprehensible system returns the law to the working families it’s supposed to protect. " -

This economy is pushing struggling families to the breaking point, and our bankruptcy laws make it harder for them to get back on their feet. That's not right. I've got a plan to overhaul our consumer bankruptcy rules.
