For the people you know who keep trying to make Sweden out to be a “success story,” they very much are not. They have not achieved herd immunity. And they have had one of the highest death rates. They are not close to achieving herd immunity or “success.” https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0141076820945282 …https://twitter.com/ENirenberg/status/1300458961628520450 …

      Edward Nirenberg @ENirenberg
If your idea of herd immunity requires millions of people to die to achieve it you aren’t working towards herd immunity; you’re working on a thinly veiled eugenics campaign and have a sociopathic disregard for the value of human life.

What's really bonkers isn't that to get 65% immunity we'd have 2 million deaths, but that this immunity would last < 1yr. While there'd be some decrease due to murdering the most at risk, to keep 65% it would probably take half a million deaths annually until we have a vaccine.

Why do you think immunity would last less than one year?

Because immunity wanes. People have verifiably gotten COVID19 twice. Current rec is you can assume you're immune for about 3 mos after infection. Obviously many are immune longer than that but lifetime immunity is highly unlikely.

Also, many of the people who survive their first infection may acquire cardio or respiratory conditions that make them more likely to die in the next flu season.
