I'm watching YouTube CEO @SusanWojcicki speak at SXSW with @nxthompson and she's discussing the "responsibility to tell people in the world" about current events. This happened yesterday:https://twitter.com/blakersdozen/status/973301915743170560 …

      Ryan Mac added,

.@SusanWojcicki "If there is an important news event we want to be delivering the right information." Minutes later she says, "We are not a news organization."

.@SusanWojcicki announces that videos about conspiracies will now be accompanied by informative text from Wikipedia.

The obvious question here is what about a current event that falls victim to a conspiracy theory? For example, the Parkland incident had conspiracies thread within the first two days. Was there adequate Wikipedia information to counter those conspiracies?

Wojcicki says that right now the feature will only be used on conspiracies that have significant debate on YouTube. The example on stage showed a Wikipedia excerpt used on a moon landing conspiracy video.

Also uhhhh does YouTube know that anyone can edit Wikipedia? Someone should tell them...

Let's go back to the Austin explosions example yesterday. YouTube surfaced an InfoWars video on the subject. There was probably no Wikipedia entry for it at the time. What happens in that situation?

Earlier, @nxthompson asked how do you decide who is a credible, trustworthy source on YouTube. @SusanWojcicki refused to say what factors go into deciding. She suggested that some of the things they look at are "number of journalistic awards" and "amount of traffic" they have.

One reason she gave for not releasing the factors that go into the decision is because "these are usually complicated algorithms."

I feel that's a bit disingenuous though. YouTube may not want this out there because it's their secret sauce, not because it's complicated. The algorithms may very well be complicated, but why not release the factors so that the people who want to understand them can do so?

We're now in the audiencer Q&A. If a question gets through about Jake Paul criticizing social platforms following Parkland my life will be complete.

47 who were chronically angry at my inability to make it on the doorstep. Me writing the copy before jumping on my bike to deliver it would've been a bigger disaster.
