I found the Facebook emails & docs released by the DCMS committee lacking in anything crazy damning against the co, but this note about "People You May Know" hoovering up call and text data is pretty interesting. Also shows execs were aware of how bad it would look to the public.pic.twitter.com/Ll7tE1sOMO

This is some other shady behavior. FB toyed with the idea of making a setting that was meant for user privacy not stay permanent so that people would share with a wider audience.pic.twitter.com/fjEV1yTMDz

A lot of irony in looking back on why Facebook made changes to its API in order to "increase user trust"pic.twitter.com/FSLGZUfmS0

The one big takeaway from these emails is to remind everyone how dependent we and companies are on Facebook data. Everything from dumb apps like Hot or Not to Netflix to Lyft. Even a Walgreens photo kiosk wanted to use Facebook login. We are completely dependent.pic.twitter.com/BXUZe2Y0ZZ

This confirms something that I've long heard and used in reporting for other stories. Zuckerberg had a list of competitors that were restricted from FB partnerships. Unsurprisingly these were competitors that I previously heard included chat apps like Kakao and Line.pic.twitter.com/q5vLTjIBtd

Kinda interesting that the DCMS committee released the FB docs on the day the markets were closed because of the Bush funeral. If they wanted max attention they probably should have waited for Wall Street?

Our first story from the docs takes a look at how Facebook as using Onavo to suck up mobile app usage data and in turn make a $19 billion decision to buy WhatsApphttps://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/charliewarzel/why-facebook-bought-whatsapp …

Zuckerberg responds to doc dump w/ a FB post saying API changes were meant to prevent “sketchy” apps like the one exploited by Cambridge Analytica. That would be a more compelling argument if they weren’t in discussions to whitelist apps w/ names like “Hot Or Not” in the emails.pic.twitter.com/2UkizPt6tz
