Archana has dreams of staying in education so that she can get a well paid job and live a good quality of life. We want to support Archana’s ambitions so that she is happy and fulfilled in whatever she decides to do in the future. #SmallCharityStory #SmallCharityWeek @SCWeek2022

Archana’s family of 4 live below the poverty line. Their home is made of bamboo and used sacks of sand to keep out the monsoon rain. Her father is a daily labourer earning Rs 5000 (£52) a month and her elder brother works with a potter, painting statues for Rs 6000 (£63) month.

Archana was married 2 years ago but after unrest with her in-laws she was forced to return home to live with her parents. Despite criticism from her community, she returned to education and she is now a first year Bachelor of Arts student. #SmallCharityWeek #SmallCharityStory

Despite the huge disruption to life, wading through water to navigate their home, we have witnessed our students coming to RISE’s Yearn to Learn classes year after year during the monsoon rains and we are in awe of their dedication 💛

Monsoon season has commenced in India and for families like our students’ in rural West, this can be a desperately challenging time. Homes that are made of bamboo like our student’s Paru in this photo, suffer the most damage #SmallCharityWeek #smallcharitystory @SCWeek2022

Her ambition is to continue on in college and become a school teacher. We are so proud of Puja who has worked tirelessly over the past two years running her new family home and juggling all the challenges of being a mother whilst going to school everyday. What a role model!

Like many girls in rural India, Puja was forced into marriage at the age of 17 because of pressure in the community and dropped out of school. RISE continued to stay in touch with her, as we do with all our previous students #SmallCharityStory @SCWeek2022

Our doors are always open to anyone who wants to return to education. We were so happy when after having her baby, Puja resumed Class 11 so that she could complete her Higher Secondary exams (A-Levels), which she took this year passing with a tremendous 71% #SmallCharityWeek

Behold the beauty of rural Bengal as the sun sets over the monsoon rain filled paddy field. For RISE’s students, the paddy field is central to their livelihood - planting dhaan, growing seedlings and nurturing them in the fields for 3 months to provide rice. #SmallCharityStory

We are thrilled to share that 95% of RISE’s students passed their Higher Secondary and 58% passed their Madhyamik exams this year. This is an outstanding achievement for these 50 students who against all odds studied to pass their exams and we are so happy for them! 💛💛💛

What a great #onthisday #throwback to 6 March 2016 when some of our students participated in the Kolkata Marathon Fun Run - we did a quick pit stop in front of the stunning Victoria Memorial as our students had never been to the capital of West Bengal before which they loved 🧡
