Zaha Hadid was the first woman to receive the
#RoyalGoldMedal on her own (rather than in a partnership), in 2016. This is a student design from the start of her career, which reimagines Trafalgar Square as an elaborate multi-storeyed arcaded structure. ^Indiapic.twitter.com/GJCvEVDFio

Recipients of the
#RoyalGoldMedal often mark the occasion by donating work to the#RIBACollections. This sketch for the Fundacio Nadir Afonso in Chaves was a gift from Alvaro Siza when he received the medal in 2009. ^Indiapic.twitter.com/aFewTL3r4I

Perhaps one of the
#RoyalGoldMedal's most surprising recipients was the city of Barcelona, rather than an individual or partnership, in 1999. The aim was to recognise the success of the city's design over the years, as well as the role of its urban planners. ^Indiapic.twitter.com/VwRaFxDUML

Ray Eames was the first woman to receive the medal (with Charles Eames, in 1979). Their collaboration was integral to their work - Charles said anything he could do, "Ray can do better”. Other partnerships to have won include
@odonnell_tuomey and Patty + Michael Hopkins. ^Indiapic.twitter.com/MZhmqn3y01

Kenzo Tange was the
#RoyalGoldMedal's first Japanese recipient. He had recently completed the dramatic concrete St. Mary's Cathedral in Tokyo when he was nominated for the 1965 medal. Its structure is made up of eight curved walls that form a large cross spanning its plan. ^Indiapic.twitter.com/LYk2hfvxbs

The medal was always intended to be international, but its early years were limited to British, French, German, Italian and Austrian recipients. The first American medallist (1893) was Richard Morris Hunt, who designed the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. ^Indiapic.twitter.com/3QG5okEfmE

But not everyone was thrilled to be nominated. In 1874 the art and architecture critic John Ruskin declined the medal in a rather spicy letter in which he accused RIBA of not educating the public on "the difference between good architecture and bad". ^Indiapic.twitter.com/ig4zkLfC9w
