    Kenzo Tange was the 's first Japanese recipient. He had recently completed the dramatic concrete St. Mary's Cathedral in Tokyo when he was nominated for the 1965 medal. Its structure is made up of eight curved walls that form a large cross spanning its plan. ^India

    The medal was always intended to be international, but its early years were limited to British, French, German, Italian and Austrian recipients. The first American medallist (1893) was Richard Morris Hunt, who designed the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. ^India

    But not everyone was thrilled to be nominated. In 1874 the art and architecture critic John Ruskin declined the medal in a rather spicy letter in which he accused RIBA of not educating the public on "the difference between good architecture and bad". ^India
