For reasons, I am working out unit conversions for the Friedmann equations. I think the original Kolb and Turner Appendix A may be using a slightly funky value of big G, but keep disagreeing about the last one or two sig figs.

Fired this off last night. Would actually love an explanation from on this - the whole “transition fuel” trope is popular among people who want to slow-walk climate adaptation but part of it just seems innumerate.

Don't normally post @actparty releases, but this one seems to be laughably wrong. Claim is that "According to figures from MBIE, coal use for electricity generation was up 29.5 per cent in 2022." But actual MBIE figures show coal use in 22 well down act.org.nz/press-releases

Five years to the day since Dad died. Since we farewelled him with a death notice that began "Soldier, sailor, doctor, writer, editor, poet, advocate, actor, singer, and cryptic cruciverbalist" he would have loved this poem. (Also a great Dad and epically devoted husband)

Today’s short poem is called ‘Epitaph for a Cryptic Crossword Compiler’.

Kind of weird that Hubble's constant is measured in units of inverse seconds. Or Hertz, which is also the unit of frequency. But so far as we know we don't live in a bouncing universe. (Cosmology shitposting)

We're going to need more electricity generation to decarbonise transport and deal with process heat, but there is also a fair bit of geo and wind under construction or consented, and solar is just getting started. This release from ACT is remarkably wrong.

There is actually an interesting story in our electricity generation -- coal+gas is on a long-term downtrend, and wind+geothermal is on the rise... (These numbers are all smoothed over the last four quarters; it's spiky on an inter-annual basis)

Rain's stopped. Sun's out. And the whole city smells a little like the changing rooms at a school swimming pool.

Watching a TV show where a dude gets murdered because he is holding a $25k scratchie ticket. Followed immediately by an ad for Lotto. Yeah, nah.

You hear a lot that New Zealand has been importing lots of coal to make electricity -- but that was true for a blip in 2021, but the long term trend is down, and wind is growing quickly...
