It’s official!🎉 I’m delighted to be appointed as Chair of the new Regulatory Horizon Council. Important work ahead to make sure that the UK’s world-leading regulatory frameworks stay ahead of technology, enabling innovation while building public trust.

Brexit Day: things carry on. British people will have to work somewhat harder than otherwise to earn somewhat less than otherwise. Britain has opted for lower growth before - the 1920s, the 1970s - and now they're doing it again. Almost traditional, really.

Physicists lecturing economists on their uses of math without daring to dig out how and why econ use of math might differ from phys use of math isn’t likely to lead to their endorsement of new models, even if econ pub system wasn’t broken (and we agree that it is)

Do you really value your online privacy? Professor Garrett Johnson‘s research suggests that there is significantly more nuance to the online advertising and privacy debate. Take a look!

If you care about market failures, you would not feel frustrated and undermined by economics. Quite the contrary, a great deal of current economics is concerned about market inefficiencies and failures, and gives students a lens on how policy can address such failures.

The - edited by George Osborne - has a front page story on Met decision to roll out facial recognition which, astonishingly, doesn’t include comments from any of the 25 rights groups who oppose it.. 🤔 AND an editorial that “strongly backs” the decision 🙄 disgrace

Thanks ! See my pinned post for more. I also disagree re: protectionism. In ongoing work, we point out that firms that serve a small share of EU customers engage in more costly compliance activity because fines are on their global not just EU revenue.

And it is also somewhat ironic that the guy who lambasts economics for not taking climate change seriously puts market failures at the very end of his foundational economics textbook For those interested:

Disagree on afterthought comment. And a lot of exciting economics research these days does not equate price with that marginal social cost. Please stop criticizing straw man econ.
