    Digitised & now online! This beautiful notebook belonged to a medical student attending lectures of Edinburgh Professor of Anatomy, William Turner in 1881.(Seemed a bit distracted at times though)!

    Histology slides c.1950. These slides belonged to Dr Alice Margaret Insh, who worked at Shieldhall Fever Hospital. The slides were probably used for teaching, and contain a variety of samples taken from both animals and humans.

    Paisley-born pathologist Robert Carswell born 1793. Carswell was commissioned by RCSEd President John Thompson to make drawings illustrating morbid anatomy. These plates are from his work 'Pathological Anatomy', first published in 1838.

    This biscuit box lid depicts the portrait "The Tooth Drawer" by Jan Steen. The box is of Dutch origin and is perfect for putting you off eating too many sugary biscuits!

    In case you wondered what a 19th century ‘sick note’ looked like – this medical certificate states Alexander Dewar, an Edinburgh barber was “quite unfit to pursue his usual occupation” due to a “fit of apoplexy from which he narrowly escaped with his life” (dated 1826)

    Gangerous leg ulcer on a young seafarer depicted in "Principles of Surgery", first published in 1801 by Edinburgh surgeon John Bell FRCSEd. It is now understood to be a historical case of necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating disease), a term first coined in 1952

    Kathleen Lynn born 1874. Doctor & activist, she fought for Irish independence & worked tirelessly to improve child health in Ireland. Her diaries are one of the treasure of our . You can read her Easter 1916 entries -

    1829 serial killer William Burke was hanged in front of a crowd of 25, 000. We have digitised the only 'on the ground' witness account, by Edinburgh student Thomas Hume (all others were from spectators overlooking Parliament Square). Available here:

    in 1829, William Burke was hanged for the murder of Margaret Docherty. It is estimated that 25,000 people turned up to watch the execution. His body was then dissected by Alexander Monro Tertius at Edinburgh University. This pocketbook is made from Burke's skin.
