I believe most large retail stores explicitly instruct security not to intervene (from on high). They fear lawsuits and bad press more than getting robbed hand over fist, thus far at least.

Of course, the vast majority of places in the US have historically had something resembling effective policing, until very recently perhaps, so I suppose that might change. More likely they'll retreat to safer neighborhoods.

I suspect most would respond similarly now, *especially* amongst in more educated neighborhoods in left-leaning coastal cities. Why stick your neck out if the store has a policy of not intervening?
