Facebook said last week that it won't fact-check political speech or limit micro-targeting political ads, so paid lies will flourish in the 2020 campaigns. So will free lies. And who's going to lie the most? America's liar-in-chief.https://bit.ly/2uJC78R

We disagree Sec. Reich. Democracy depends upon a well informed and educated populace. People need to take responsibility and look for the truth. If they're lazy and don't then we end up with the government we deserve.
-
That sounds great in a perfect world, but the reality is that disinformation campaigns and hypertargeted ads are so prevalent, that even “searching” for the truth might not land the person into reliable sources of information. That’s how we get to people having their own reality.

Shouldn’t we rather be teaching the public to have the critical thinking skills to form their own informed opinions so they do not blindly follow others?

I agree with most of this, but I would suggest simply breaking up Facebook would do little to solve their core problem. That would just create a bunch of facebooks with the same financial incentives. Instead regulation would make more sense.

I'm not sure being broken up is the solution but something needs to happen, that's for sure.
-
I'm wondering how a break up would look. A lot of people on separate platforms? I think we're better off on the same platform. I don't think it's FB or Twitter's job to be police of the internet. Maybe there should be a new government regulatory agency for that.

most of what’s needed for this could be achieved w/regulatory oversight
