Clearly, the big story here is about guns. http://www.realclearpolicy.com/blog/2015/12/21/guns_vs_cars_and_drugs_1500.html … pic.twitter.com/SEZ2dM1ODG

@RAVerBruggen @charlescwcooke since violent crime overall keeps dropping, why are gun deaths remaining steady? Shouldn’t they drop too?

@jbrodkin @RAVerBruggen Gun homicides are massively down, as is all gun crime. But suicides have become the lion's share: 2/3 on average.

@RAVerBruggen How would drunk driving deaths be categorized? Any of these? Sorry if you've already answered.

@RAVerBruggen Prob the drug-induced causes category that you cited? So just pure auto incidents? Was looking for MADD influence. GR8 work!

@teagueosaurus The drug-induced one doesn't include alcohol or motor vehicles either. Sample of what it does: pic.twitter.com/vJwM6TA5HC

@teagueosaurus (The downside of WONDER is that once you go beyond the basic categories it gets ridiculous in a hurry.)

      @RAVerBruggen @GarettJones truncated y axis klaxon

    2. Robert VerBruggen ‏@RAVerBruggen Dec 22

@ciphergoth @GarettJones Explicitly noted in the post. Though admittedly not in the tweet, which is probably as far as a lot of people got.

    3. Paul Crowley ‏@ciphergoth Dec 22

@RAVerBruggen @GarettJones I think it would be much better not to have truncated it at all.

    4. Garett Jones ‏@GarettJones Dec 22

@ciphergoth @RAVerBruggen I have zero problem with a so-called truncated y-axis. Zero is often not the natural comparison point!

@GarettJones @RAVerBruggen In this instance zero seems pretty natural.

@ciphergoth @GarettJones Depends how you define natural (imaginable minimum vs. realistic min) but that would make the chart half blank.

    8. Paul Crowley ‏@ciphergoth Dec 22

@RAVerBruggen @GarettJones We're already below the past's "realistic minimum". Half blank would convey a more accurate impression.

@ciphergoth @RAVerBruggen I'm actually going to join in on the complaining: I'm upset you truncated from above: 100K is the right ceiling! ☺

@christopherburd @hbdchick I wondered if it was some kind of data problem, but CDC doesn't seem to think so: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/su6203a30.htm …

@RAVerBruggen Separating gun homicide vs suicide is important. Otherwise, awesome chart.

@MassimoHeitor Yeah, that's mentioned in the post. "Gun deaths" are a pet peeve of mine, just presenting data everyone was talking about.
