Meanwhile, the USA flu season appears headed for a double peak. Flu diagnoses surged in late 2019 with unusually high rates of Influenza B, and now rates of Influenza A infection are climbing. People can catch both in a single season. Did you get your flu shot?

I care about Wuhan coronavirus because it has real pandemic potential and a ~2% case-fatality rate. But so far, >99% of cases are in China. So unless you or a family member have been to China recently, it is currently more likely that you get struck by lightning than catch it.

China's list of suspected cases of Wuhan coronavirus still awaiting testing currently stands at 23,260, nearly equal to the number of confirmed cases. However, for the first time in 2 weeks, the number of pending cases didn't grow, suggesting China may finally be catching up.

In terms of global mean temperature, January, February, and March are the months with the largest variations due to weather. Northern hemisphere winter varies a lot from year-to-year. A record warm year becomes much more likely following a warm winter.

Though the 2,800 new cases of Wuhan coronavirus in China is the largest absolute daily increase, it is also the lowest percentage increase since this disease took off. We've moved from ~50% daily growth to ~20% daily growth (and hopefully still trending down).

To the excitement of millions, the groundhog prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring this year. If we keep burning fossil fuels, then he can be right every year. Just don't blame Phil for the fires, floods, and heatwaves.

January 30 adds nearly 2,000 more confirmed coronavirus cases in China. The doubling time may have slowed, slightly, but the outbreak is far from over. The WHO declares a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern". The USA issues a rare "Do Not Travel" alert for China.

It is hard to grasp the enormous scale of human carbon emissions. Since 1850, it is estimated that human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and clearing forests, have released more carbon than is currently present in all the living things on Earth.

It is worth noting that in addition to the 7,711 confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus in China, the Chinese have identified a further 12,167 suspected cases awaiting testing. Even if the spread might be slowing, it is too early to predict where the peak might be.

Both the confirmed cases and deaths associated with the Wuhan coronavirus continue their rapid growth. However, the trend may be slowing down a bit compared to the previous rate of exponential growth. Possibly an impact of infection control efforts started a week prior?

Nature just published a comment by and I pointing out that the high-emissions RCP8.5 emissions scenario – with its 500% increase in coal use by 2100 – is increasingly unlikely in a world of falling clean energy prices. A thread: 1/11
