The father was our client & we were fighting for his and his family's freedom. We stand in solidarity with the family that has to bear this tragedy due to the injustice of Trump's draconian anti-immigrant policies.

Since Trump's presidency there have been at least 36 deaths of people in DHS custody, including children and adults. ICE is currently imprisoning roughly 700 people at Karnes, including pregnant women, children, and babies.

We're both devastated by this news but also very angry. A number of detainees in recent days have told us how frightened they are to be locked in detention as the coronavirus spreads throughout the country. We demand that ICE release all immigrant detainees immediately.

One person told us: "My wife has ovarian cysts. She is in lots of pain & has gone to the doc here many times but has been told treatment is not available. If this is how this center handles routine medical care, I fear for our lives if the virus reaches us & we are stuck here."

The mental health impact on people who are imprisoned for the crime of seeking a safe haven is overwhelming. The added stress of the coronavirus potentially getting inside the center is deadly.

We anticipate that this won’t be the last death at Karnes unless ICE immediately releases all those detained at this detention center and in custody around the country. A dirty and cramped detention center in the face of a pandemic is unsafe and inhumane.

PLEASE JOIN US IN DEMANDING ICE RELEASES ALL IMMIGRANTS FROM DETENTION CENTERS IMMEDIATELY. Call your elected Rep, tweet at them. We understand everyone is under pressure right now but we must protect the most vulnerable amongst us before it's too late.

I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this but if covid-19 has yet to infect anyone in these detention centers and they have no place to go and isolate themselves then demanding them to be released puts them more at risk then keeping them on the detention centers

Hi Jeremy. From what we've observed working in detention centers most of our clients DO have somewhere to go. The vast majority of them have family/friends here in the U.S. who they could go to upon being released. They're in more danger confined in a detention center w/hundreds.
