On this Day 1921 Wg Cdr Peter "Petey" McPeteson carried out the first test flight of the Osprey V22 Heli-Jet from the Broom Lake test facility to the Nellie's bombing range where he successfully dropped 8 semi-nuclear Paveway 6 missiles before returning for tea & medals #AvGeekpic.twitter.com/ocFy8Rw6Mc

Far too early for the tech. must have been at the least 1923.

The overalls date it to, at the earliest, late 1922. As the colour 'white' wasn't invented till November 1922.

Not all heroes wear capes. But Petey McPeteson did. Which proved to be a really bad idea, as it got caught in one of the rotors as he was posing for publicity photos and promptly turned him into gooey confetti.

It was all going very well until ground crew member Dave 'Wrongway' Phillips (pictured) put the propellers on upside down and the wings snapped off at the next take off attempt.

Not a Furry RotoDyne? Also, kudos to the Canberra driver with that nice Insta B&W filter.

Another interesting fact is that one of those super smart Boffins had to maintain a tight grip to prevent it lifting off by itself......hence the phrase "Left holding the Baby"

Think the actual chap designated to that task was corporal “Lefty” Wright.

Fun fact: the four engines had to be hand adjusted by that bloke from horizontal to vertical, which was a bit awkward when it was flying.
