Fact of the Day: During the Battle of Britain (1917) it took 7 Hurricane fighter jets to defend each B17 bomber. The Hurricane would fly in a curved formation in front of the B17 to fire at any enemy jet approaching, this manoeuvre became known as the Arc of Fire #AvGeekpic.twitter.com/NoD0fsI9sB

They were masters of low level flying too, looking at that.

That was taken from a Canberra, they're actually at 10,000ft 👍

Amazing shot from the Canberra, probably from a height of 100,000 feet so they appear to be much closer to the ground.

As you are well aware, this was a short lived strategy as plane 7 (“the pivot” as it was known) was subsequently dropped from the formation as it frequently shot down planes 3 & 4 The formation then became the better known “bit smaller arc of fire”

All jokes aside, the Luftwaffe just didn't stand a chance. Look at those beautiful aircraft. Ok. Enough seriousness. I think you'll find that's a U2 bomber, you can see Bono on the edge of the wing.
