Fact of the Day: The Harrier Jumpjet was the first plane to ever "fly" without wings. Flt Lt Ronan West-Liffe made the first test flight over the #RAFLuton Broom Lake test facility. The flight was such a success it inspired Flt Lt West-Liffe to write the song Flying Without Wingspic.twitter.com/mrTeiJlII1

I've heard Flt Lt West-Liffe liked to use a nearby rollercoaster to build up enough momentum for takeoff. Very clever idea.

My favourite feature was the rod they put on the front. This did the same job as a cane for a blind person and allowed the pilot to measure their altitude because there was no windows or instruments in the cockpit. They used to paint the pilot on the outside to throw people off.

The first lifting body aircraft under test were Brick 1, Brick 2 ,Brick 3 and so on until they realised the best thing about smacking your head on a brick was when you stop.
