Fact of the Day: During pilot training at #RAFLuton recruits have to complete 1000hrs of blindfolded flight in a Spitfire to familiarise themselves with the controls. Only the top 1% of recruits pass. This phase of training is the origin of the phrase "flying blind" #AvGeekpic.twitter.com/uvZlygYvnM

Thanks for that fact! I'll be sure to repeat it and look well informed.

Kudos to all pilots who could accurately spit at enemy targets even while blindfolded.

That's how I got my driving license. Both me and the official were blindfolded to keep it an honest exam. My friends rocked the car hard. So without driving 1 ft. I got my license! 😂 😂 😂

This was taken during a fly by of the tower at Mach 1.8. The key to success in getting such a sharp image is good lighting by the afterburner of an English Electric Lightning and a high shutter speed of 100,000feet.

After extensive research, it was discovered that prolonged periods in the NAAFI bar, trainee pilots felt confident to fly blind and drunk.

My great uncle, PO Ewan Orfulle-Clott, designed the Blindfold (Pilot Training) Mk1. After initial complaints, especially from relarives, he improved his design and the Mk2 can be distinguished by the presence of the 2 vision holes.
