The flow noise caused by the shoulder pads gave them a unique sound signature. This made them easier to track and so it became common practice for this type of submarine to hide on the surface.

In the early 2000s Sinky’s shoulder pads were replaced by a more sophisticated type converter tool whereby it showed up on radar but not as a threat, known as the Submarine Underwater Battle Water Activated Yacht system
