It does justify all the hundreds of hours the Ordnance Survey spent engaraving in the National grid though, makes air navigation so much easier. The letters and numbers don’t show up very well though from that height.

That's because they were the early diesel engined ones, they were a little slower accelerating than the petrol but could go twice as far and because the diesel is thicker and waxy could fly higher without the fuel icing up.
