I believe the name was Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.

Maverick was the US Navy's Pete Mitchell. Iceman is the RAF's Pete Mitchell. Maverick did his inverted -4G dive in 1984. Iceman achieved his in 1956, but of course is overshadowed by Hollywood glitz power of the US Navy.
