One of the things that makes the Spitfire such a remarkable plane is that it can fly with up to 80% of its wing and fuselage missing! Photo: Flt Lt Doug 'Dougy' Douglas returning to #RAFLuton after the Battle of Slough (1832) #AvGeekpic.twitter.com/P2E1tWKG3h

Pilots are also optional. They weren't included in the planes until the late 19th century. This must have been one of those early trials strapping a human into the chassis.
