    RAAD رعد (Rapid Acquisition Atmospheric Detector) is a science instrument developed by Emirati physics students, and won the science payload proposal for the competition held by the to study Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes (TGFs) ⚡️

    The science payload team at have built a small Thermal Vacuum Chamber and conducted Thermal Vacuum Tests (TVT) on the 2x2 LBC/CeBr3 crystal array to check if the crystals can survive. They did the tests up to 50 C and down to -40 C, and the array passed the tests!

    So what are TGFs (terrestrial gamma-ray flashes)?! One of ’s satellite missions, Fermi, studies them in great detail, and even found evidence that they produce antimatter!

    CubeSats are miniature sized satellites that are launched and operated in space the same way as normal satellites, just on a much smaller scale. 🛰

    Our science payload RAAD will host 2 of the fastest gamma-ray detectors ever to be flown onboard a 3U cubesat, to study these TGF phenomena in better detail! Its development is currently being conducted at with the support of multiple collaborative entities.
