I once used ClusterSSH to add a service start command to /etc/rc.conf. It turns out that ">" and ">>" do very different things. @cperciva and other FreeBSD folks are now turning pale at the idea of this going out fleet-wide.

We were transfering a massive amount of SQL data from heroku to AWS. We had a table for changelog of important records (users, carts, etc). That was the biggest table, so we decided to move all but that first. We wanted to still record changes to the idea...

*so the idea was that we would create the table in the new database, but set the sequential ID to be 100000 higher than the last changelog id (INT), allowing us to port the old data later. We did that and everything was green! New changelogs were created!...

I terminated the primary single production MongoDB node in the AWS console because I was new, and nobody had enabled termination protection on the primary application DB. 6 hours and a lucky snapshot front they day before and it was back with termination protection.

I once accidentally via copy-pasta left a file server's IP address as its gateway address. The router got super confused and led to weird degraded performance for the whole cluster that took Cisco support 26 hours to track down.
