The term ‘patriarchy’ ascribes power to fathers, not men. Millions of men are not fathers.

This makes some good points but Quillette chose the silliest quote from it as clickbait. The author’s a single mom. If she helps her kids financially is that patriarchy? No, it’s parenting. My parents both had jobs but my mom also did all the housework; that’s patriarchy.
-
So since anecdotal evidence is the standard you’re applying I have a question. Will the patriarchy exist until all division of labor amongst every single family in America is precisely equal? If I had a father who did everything and a mother who did nothing is that a matriarchy?
-
the article is anecdotal and esp the quote pulled by Quillette. Hence my anecdotal response. I don’t know? If the power dynamics between women and men as a whole reversed, would we have a matriarchy? Hard to see why not.
-
I think what might help is if we had a better idea of what is meant by the term. Do you have a credible example of how the US is a patriarchy?
-
The Quillette essay doesn’t really give a definition, but from dictionary .com - “a social system in which power is held by men, through cultural norms and customs that favor men and withhold opportunity from women.”
-
So no one can disagree we’re getting away from this. But when I was a kid moms did most of the house work, even if they also worked full time. Even today stats show women do more housework even if both spouses work full time. This is a remnant of patriarchy
-
It's difficult to see how division of labor comes even close to the definition you provided.
-
The person who holds the most power, in my example, is the person who has to do the least amount of dredge work. He’s the “king of the castle” so doesn’t have to do the dishes or toilette cleaning. You don’t see it this way?

One thing about the left that is consistently striking: the profound lack of gratitude. It's tiresome and so uninspiring.
