This is trivially true and spectacularly unhelpful. The entire crisis is the outcome of the government's steadfast refusal to contemplate thinking differently about power sharing. We are where we are specifically because they utterly refuse to entertain the notion.

For 20 years I argued that foreign influence is relatively minor in Venezuelan politics. That's becoming less true day by day. And playing host to other powers' proxy wars absolutely frikkin' sucks...

The foreign powers now making the most important decisions about Venezuela don't give a rat's ass about Venezuelans.

On one way, the worst case scenario is here already: the internationalization of the crisis is almost complete now, and that carries enormous risks of its own.

Venezuela is the place today where left-leaning people can establish their seriousness about human rights. Criticizing the human rights abuses of the regime's of the right is easy. If you want to prove you mean it, you have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Maduro's victims.

That's why it's *so* important for principled people on the left to do what Michelle Bachelet did Wednesday: Speak. UP. Collect the evidence. Look at it closely. And say it LOUD.

His supporters will dismiss out of hand human right criticism from Trump, Pompeo, Duque or Macri, no matter how well documented. Worse, they'll take such criticism as proof that there really is a big right-wing conspiracy against the Bolivarian revolution. It helps him!

Thing is, Nicolás Maduro doesn't give a rat's ass when a conservative politician points to his many, appalling, repeated and deepening human rights abuses. Actually, those denunciations *help* him. They give his propaganda guys material to work with...

Former judge Maria Afiuni, who was jailed after contravening a direct order from Hugo Chávez, raped and tortured in detention, granted house arrest due her poor health, has just been sentenced to five additional years for “spiritual corruption”. Venezuelans are facing evil.

Me, thinking about nobody in particular.. "It takes just as little courage for an American socialist to criticize Brazil’s far-right president as it does for an American on the far right to criticize Venezuelan socialism."

The duty to apply universal values to all nations, Venezuela very much included, falls on everyone — but it doesn’t fall on everyone equally.

Burocracia canadiense.
