In our society the $-poorest people are also often pretty creepy. Rude, smelly, untrustworthy, and mentally ill. (E.g., Overnighters movie.) And yet many are eager to show sympathy for them.

Replying to @robinhanson @davidmanheim
I've seen the Overnighters several times and found none of those people creepy. I've honestly never been creeped out as much as I have reading your horrific blogs. I have two degrees with 1st class honours and I can think... It's just the phrase "a gentle rape" is abhorrent

You can’t read his blog. You can’t understand it; please don’t pretend that you’re grokking Hanson sufficiently.

His arguments continue to miss the point. The people on the Overnighters aren't creepy at all. Poverty and dirtiness doesn't make you creepy. Calling for the "gentle rape" and torture of women to appease lonely men does.

It doesn’t call for that. You didn’t understand the post.

It's really not complicated. Suggesting torture as a way of dealing with cheating women? It's the easiest refute to say I don't understand but offer no explanation. It's like gaslighting. You argue the same way he does.pic.twitter.com/veiluZwSIg

You understand that he’s not actually suggesting that, but making a larger point?

I get he is trying to say how bad cuckoldry is, not make rape sound OK. But his assertion that a "gentle rape" isn't as bad as a "standard rape" is incorrect. He suggests raping a drugged woman would remove some of the trauma for her. I wonder what the Cosby survivors would say

Can you not see beyond the examples to the larger point being made? Do you understand that the examples used are almost immaterial to the point being made?

I studied philosophy, I can understand that you can use life examples as part of a larger argument. But it doesn't detract from the fact that he describes some rapes as "gentle". Rape is not made less traumatic by drug use or by "trying to keep it a secret". Would you agree?
