ex contradictione is the disjunctive syllogism [(pVq)&~p) |- q] plus introduction [p |- pVq] both are valid in scholastic logic

the two propositions don’t need to share a subject to use the disjunctive syllogism; ie from “x is red or y is green” and “x is not red” we conclude “y is green

(as you note the preposterous thing is that you can draw inferences that have no common terms with the contradictory pair of premises)
